Vice president joins Jill Biden at Rehoboth book signing

Children's book brings teachers, military families to Browseabout
July 7, 2012

When Dr. Jill Biden arrived at Browseabout Books on Thursday, July 5 to sign her children's book, she brought hundreds of supporters to town, including her biggest fan, the vice president.

"It's great to be in town, but in-town here is just like in-town in Washington D.C.," Vice President Joe Biden said in the bookstore. "I'm Jill Biden's husband. It's great to be home."

Signing hundreds of copies of her book, "Don't Forget, God Bless Our Troops," Jill drew a mix of school teachers, military families and presidential supporters to the book store just one day after Fourth of July celebrations.

Inspired by granddaughter Natalie's experience when her father, Beau Biden, was deployed to Iraq in 2008, the book also offers resources for military families and children to cope with a family member's deployment.

"My experience through my son's deployment made me realize how important it is for all Americans to get a glimpse inside the life of a military family and to understand what it means when a family member is deployed," Jill wrote in a letter from the author.

Though only 1 percent of all Americans serve in the military, their families serve too, she wrote, with more than 2.2 million service members and 1.9 million children, newborn to age 18, affected by a family member’s deployment.

Published in 2012 by Simon and Schuster, Jill Biden will donate all net author proceeds to charities that support military families and children. The publisher is also donating a portion of proceeds to charities that support military families.

As Frederick, Md., resident Colleen Miller waited in a line that stretched around the perimeter of the bookstore, she explained her reasons for coming to the signing.

"I am a 20-plus year military spouse, and I teach military kids," Miller said. "I really appreciate that she and Mrs. Obama have brought military families to the forefront."

"Don’t Forget, God Bless Our Troops" is available at booksellers nationwide.
