Cape football battles Cougars and Cats in first scrimmage
Cape Henlopen went to Cat Country Aug. 22, scrimmaging the Cougars of Delcastle and Wildcats of Howard Tech on the campus of Delcastle High School.
DelCastle and Howard were mirror images of each other last season, the Cougars finishing the season 1-9 while the Wildcats of Howard piled up big points during a 9-1 regular season, which included a victory over Archmere in the opening round of the Division II state tournament.
“I am really pleased with how we played and got after people, and we are so far ahead in terms of leadership from the previous two seasons, it's just unbelievable," Vikings head coach Bill Collick said. “I'm not saying we don't need a lot of work, because we do, and this Saturday, Aug. 25, will be a step when we host Stephen Decatur in a scrimmage that will feature down and distance and also part of the punting game.”
Cape is coming off an exciting 8-2 season but lost three starting running backs in Dominique Brisco, Sammy Mohr and Jerome Johnson.
"We started Juan Saez at fullback and Cody Dmiterchik and Justin Lopez at the halfbacks,” Collick said. "Lopez can also play fullback. Michael Mapp and Jeremiah Cohen came in and gave us some good speed to the outside running the rocket toss."
Coach Collick also mentioned that with a 6-foot-3 quarterback like Diaz Nardo who is athletic and can throw the football with accuracy, finding people who can catch the football is a real key to offensive success for this 2012 football team.
"Kevin Wright and Andrew Grau had some nice catches,” Collick said.
Cape will scrimmage at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 30 at Delmar. The Wildcats were 9-1 last season, their only loss coming at the hands of Indian River.
