Delaware River and Bay Authority Police Department to DedicateFiring Range in Memory of Delaware Memorial Bridge Patrolman Harry P. Cloud
(New Castle, DE) The Delaware River and Bay Authority Police department will dedicate its Firing Range in the memory of Patrolman Harry Passmore Cloud at a ceremony at the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Last month, the Authority Commission passed a resolution to designate the Delaware River and Bay Authority Police Department Firing Range as the “Ptlm. Harry P. Cloud Memorial Police Range.”
What: Delaware River and Bay Authority officials will formally dedicate the Police Department’s Firing Range as the “Ptlm. Harry P. Cloud Memorial Police Range. The firing range has been utilized by law enforcement personnel since its inception in the early 1950s. Patrolman Cloud’s sons, Dwight and Dennis, will be present for the ceremony.
When: Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 11:30 a.m.
Where: Delaware Memorial Bridge Firing Range located at the base of the Delaware Memorial Bridge in New Castle, DE. Members of the media are encouraged to be at the Vincent A. Julia Building parking lot (building is adjacent to the Toll Plaza) at 11:20 AM to be escorted to range. The range is located at the base of the Delaware bound bridge in Delaware.
Why: On October 1, 1953, Patrolman Harry P. Cloud joined the Delaware Memorial Bridge police force and served as a police officer at the Delaware Memorial Bridge for nineteen months. On Saturday, July 2, 1955, Patrolman Cloud was performing a traffic diversion assignment in the area of the Delaware Memorial Bridge Toll Plaza. Patrolman Cloud had just completed this assignment when he was tragically struck by a passing vehicle. Patrolman Cloud was transported to Delaware Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Officer Cloud was the first officer killed in the line of duty at the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
