Pettyjohn sworn in as new state senator for 19th District

December 8, 2012

Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, took the oath of office on the Senate floor of Legislative Hall Dec. 5 to officially become the state senator representing the 19th District.

The 19th District includes all or parts of Georgetown, Bridgeville, Seaford, Millsboro, Greenwood and Long Neck.

Pettyjohn was joined by all seven of his fellow Republican senators and the rest of the Senate in what was believed to be the first time in the state’s history that the Delaware Senate was sworn in as a body.

Typically, members of the Senate are sworn in individually on the first day of the new legislative session in January. The swearing in of all 21 senators was made necessary due to the combination of the once-per-decade redistricting process and a special session called by the governor to consider several judicial nominees.

It was big day for Pettyjohn, as he officially became a state lawmaker for the first time. “I’m honored to have the privilege to serve the residents of the 19th District,” he said.

In his first session in the Senate, which begins Jan. 8, Pettyjohn said he will focus on a range of issues, starting with the economy.

“For Delaware businesses to grow there needs to be less intrusive regulations,” he said. “I also will be looking at legislation to help farmers be more productive on their farms, and to ensure that students that are coming out of our public schools are well-educated and prepared to enter the workforce.”

Minority Leader Gary Simpson, R-Milford, said Pettyjohn’s background and experience will make him a valuable leader for his district and the General Assembly.

“Senator Pettyjohn has the ability to work with the towns and counties,” Simpson said. “As the former mayor of Georgetown, he knows the issues that are facing our small towns and communities throughout southern Delaware. He’ll be a great addition to the Senate.”

Pettyjohn will take part in the ceremonial swearing-in at Legislative Hall Jan. 8. He will be joined by his wife, Kelly, his daughter, Mollie, as well as other family members.
