April 2, 2013

Savannah Sistrunk, a fifth-grader at H.O. Brittingham Elementary School in Milton, has been chosen to attend the National Young Scholars Program in Washington, D.C., during the week of July 21-26.

Savannah and her family will be holding a fundraiser to help with trip expenses from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at Redner's Warehouse Market, 28253 Lexus Drive, Milford. The event will include raffle prizes, a 50/50 drawing, and a craft and bake sale.

At the National Youth Scholars Program, students choose a specific area of study such as engineering, forensic science or medicine. In addition to these discovery areas, all students participate in a leadership strand. Simulation activities and role playing encourage scholars to develop leadership skills while introducing them to the concepts of team building, problem solving, public speaking and goal setting.

Savannah loves reading, math and science, feeding the hungry and playing her clarinet. She has won awards for science and math, physical fitness, track and field, kindness and perfect attendance in addition to making the honor roll and winning an AMVETS contest. Her family motto is “Think, create, give!”
