Pop Pop's donuts opens in Rehoboth
Pop Pop’s is owned by Greg Cox, who envisions his store as a fun, family-friendly donut shop. Besides the tasty donuts, customers can not only select their own toppings but also watch the donuts being made.
“We wanted to do something that was fun for everyone. Kids could enjoy it and watch the donuts being made through our observation window. We painted the shop in sort of Key West-type colors. It’s really a nice family place to go,” Cox said.
Cox explained how a donut gets made.
“We take a powdered mix and mix it up and put it in our frying machine. We use vegetable shortening, not just cooking oil. It’s heated to 375 degrees, so it’s a little hotter than cooking french fries.
“That way it doesn’t absorb a lot of the oils or the grease from the shortening. There’s a special plunger in our hopper that forms the donut itself. It goes in the fryer and 90 seconds later it comes out real hot, so we try to cool it a little bit. Then we top it.”
Pop Pop’s offers toppings ranging from sprinkles and chocolate fudge to glaze and strawberry cream. Cox said donuts could be produced very quickly.
“Our machine will do it in about 90 seconds.
“Then, once it gets started we can produce two donuts every five seconds. So it comes out pretty quick,” he said.
Cox, a Northern Virginia resident who has been coming to Rehoboth for 25 years, said this is his first restaurant venture. Besides donuts, Pop Pop’s also offers donut sundaes, gourmet coffee and weekend specials.
“We’re really excited,” Cox said.
