John 'Jack' Hopkins, retired dairy farmer

John T. "Jack" Hopkins, 90, of Kennedyville, Md., died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, in his summer home in Ocean City, Md. Mr. Hopkins was the son of the late Barton T. and Regina Walls Hopkins.

He was born in New Castle, where he owned and operated Mansion Farms Dairy in the 1940s and 1950s. He later moved to Kennedyville, continuing his interest in farming and serving his community. Mr. Hopkins also was the owner and operator, with his late wife Evelyn, of the Mayflower Hotel on 12th Street and the boardwalk in Ocean City, Md. for many years, as well as the Mayflower Apartments, Mortgage Manor Apartments, and the Nancy Clair Condo.

Mr. Hopkins enjoyed his involvement in the Masonic order and was a member of the St. Johns Masonic Lodge No. 2 of New Castle, York Rite Consistory, New Castle, the Delaware Court No. 164 of Jesters, The NUR Temple Shrine Club of Wilmington Manor, and was a member of the Grand Lodge of Delaware. He was a life member of the Kennedyvile Volunteer Fire Company, a member of the Chestertown Elks Lodge No. 2474, Chestertown, Md., and was a former member of the Betterton-Still Pond Lions Club.

"Mr. Jack" loved to hunt waterfowl and quail and for many years enjoyed dancing and playing cards. In addition to his parents; and his wife Evelyn who died in 2009, he was also predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Gene, and Dick Hopkins; and one sister, Elizabeth Hamilton. He is survived by a son, George Barton Hopkins and his wife Patti of Kennedyville; a granddaughter, Leslie H. Mitchell and her husband Wayne of Milton; two grandsons, Brad and his wife Rachel Hopkins of Chestertown, and Barton Hopkins of Worton; Md.; and great-grandchildren, Madison, Tyler and Ava Mitchell all of Milton.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 29, in the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md., where friends and family may call after 9 a.m. Interment will follow the services in the Crumpton, Cemetery, Crumpton, Md.
