Cape beats Indian River 42-20 in rebound game

The road gets tougher over the next three weeks

The dominance of Cape in the 42-20 rebound win over Indian River Sept. 20 at Legends Stadium was, quite frankly, expected. The Indians are down this season and Cape is up.

The savoring of the win lasted as long as a short hot dog, as three big boys are coming to Legends Stadium over the next three Friday nights, beginning with Caesar Rodney, a 41-34 winner over Hodgson, followed by Bullis School of Maryland, which beat Archbishop Spalding 21-14 Sept. 20, and ending with Dover, which hung a 59-44 crooked number on Mount Saint Joseph.

Cape won the game against The River by scoring six touchdowns by five different athletes over the course of the game: Juan Saez with two, Zach Stevenson, Justin Lopez, Bill Gibbs and D.D. Gooch.

Stevenson with a 25-yard play in the first quarter and Gooch with a 22-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter both scored on passes thrown by junior quarterback Tavon Scott.

"We threw the ball deep because they were crowding the line of scrimmage," said offensive coordinator Herky Billings. "A defensive back can't be two places at once. Really, we had one called back [by Jason Wiberg] and another that Maurice Mills almost broke."

Cape played the game without injured starters Andre Flowers, Tyre Maull and Andrew Grau, who limped off after a first-down catch on the first touchdown drive of the game. All three Cape players were officially listed as "hurt" by the training staff with no further elaboration.

Austin Brooks got his first start at right tackle and did a commendable job, as did offensive linemen Nick Figun, Charles Elgin, Devin  Miller, Tom Ott, Julius Tyler and Shamar Moore.

Indian River executed a 95-yard drive just before halftime while trailing 21-0, the touchdown coming on a five-yard run from KiAnte' Sturgis. Sturgis scored a second touchdown on a short run in the third quarter. The Indians' final touchdown was a 20-yard touchdown strike from Colby Dean to Benjamin Gonski.

Jason Hernandez, Javon Currie and D.D. Gooch all had interceptions for Cape.
