The Aug. 31 Summer's End 5K in Dewey didn’t end soon enough as 330 dripping but not drying runners endured high humidity and temperatures hot enough to fry a thawed chicken to satisfy their elective misery personal goals.
“Sweat doesn’t evaporate easily when the air is already saturated with moisture," said professor John Neal, a regular runner smarter than most meteorologists.
Jason Hinkle, 28, from York, Pa., no stranger to the beach running scene, won the race in 17:43 followed by Steven Eshelman, 21, from Lincoln in 18:05.
Annie Monagle, 23, from Baltimore, Md., blazed to an 18:06 clocking and third overall. Cindy Conant, 53, from Kensington, Mass., was second on the women’s leaderboard in 20:01.
Monagle is an assistant cross country coach at Johns Hopkins University.
Just eight runners managed to go under 20 minutes in the challenging conditions.
Some notable times run by locals included John Tadler, 26, 22:43; Ross Moshier, 13, 22:49; Mike Firch, 45, 23:19; John Neal, 76, 40:07; and Rich Warshauer, 79, 40:19.
Jimbo Lyons, 80 years old from Onley, Va., who drove 90 miles to run three miles, completed the course in 42:52.
The 38th annual Bottle and Cork 10 Miler/5K will start at 8 a.m., Saturday Sept. 6. The 10-mile race starts on the Dagsworthy Avenue beach side while the 5K will start on the bay side of Dagsworthy.
