Halftime was highlight of Cape's 53-0 home win over Cape May

The highlight of the Cape versus Cape Saturday afternoon football game was the halftime presentation to the family of the late Jeff Burnham, a Vikings lineman class of '86 who passed away June 21 this year, of his framed No. 74 football jersey. Sept. 13 would have been Jeff’s 46th birthday. Current Vikings linemen Anthony Elgin, Tyre Maull, Julius Tyler, Devin Miller, Brandon Nixon and Shamar Moore presented the jersey to the family after words from Jeff’s head coach, Rob Schroeder.
The game: The number played on the Cape Henlopen pigskin piano is 88-0 over the first two games of the season. At Legends Stadium Sept. 14, the Vikings sank Cape May 53-0 after leading 43-0 at halftime.
The victory comes on the heels of a 35-0 opening-night win over Milford. And perhaps a more telling number is the one that never moved - Absolute Zero.
“We are doing what we need to do to get better at all positions on both sides of the football," said coach Bill Collick. “If we want to be part of the story when the leaves start falling, we have to be solid at every position on the field. But the season hasn’t even started yet."
Cape got started in the first quarter taking it downhill to the field house with three touchdown runs by different backs including Mike Williams with 35 yards, Bill Gibbs 41 yards and Ja’Von Currie 7 yards.
Cape flipped directions in the second quarter with three more touchdowns by Gibbs, 35 yards; Williams, 15 yards on a fumble recovery; and a Tavon Scott to Jason Wiberg 25-yard touchdown pass.
With the clock running in the second half, Cape dialed it down with scores coming on a Richard Cary 27-yard field goal and a 50-yard fourth quarter touchdown run by sophomore Robert Neall.
Sophomore soccer guy Carey scored 7 points in the game including 4 PATs and a field goal. The Vikings also converted on a pair of two-point plays: LeArris Griffin to Wiberg and Griffin to Brent Reed.
Cape’s opening two wins were against Division II opponents. Friday, Sept. 19, the Vikings play at Indian River, also a Division II school. The Indians lost at Smyrna 35-14 Sept. 12.
