Wife of Sussex GOP leader in serious condition
Ron said that just after dawn, Suzanne went outside her home to get the newspaper. She fell, hit her head and injured her hand. She told her husband she had a headache and returned to bed. Later, she became nauseous and refused to eat, he said.
About 3:30 p.m., Ron said, he could not wake her. He called 911, and Suzanne was taken to Beebe Medical Center, where tests showed she had a brain injury. From Beebe, she was sent to Christiana. Jan. 20, she underwent emergency surgery. “She’d gone out to get the paper. After I woke up, she told me she fell,” Ron said. “She said, ‘I think I bumped my head. I’ve got a headache. I’m going to go lay down.’ She said she’d been throwing up. I thought she had the flu.” Ron Sams said his wife remains in intensive care, where she is listed in serious condition.
“We’re doing good as a family. My son came in from Boston, and we have many other relatives here. She’s sleeping and on a ventilator. They did an operation. It’s a day-by-day situation,” Ron said. Suzanne is president of the Sussex County Republican Women’s Club and is also an avid quilter. Rebecca Stancliff, who is first vice president of the women’s club, said she will provide an update on Suzanne’s condition on the Sussex Republicans website. She said she and her husband, David, have been continuously fielding calls from well wishers.
“Every positive update that I have put out is met with such joy. Many, many prayers have been given,” Stancliff said.
Suzanne is serving her second term as club president, said Stancliff, who has been a club member for five years. For updates, call Ron Sams at 302-745-0871 or go to www.scrwc.net
