Alex R. Awad, government retiree

Alex R. Awad, 76, of Lewes, formerly of Bowie, Md., died peacefully Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, at Delaware Hospice, Milford. He was born Feb. 3, 1938, in Schuylkill County, Pa., son of the late William and Catherine (Tomaine) Awad.

Alex has lived in Delaware since retiring in 1997 from the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C. He enjoyed being with his family, cooking Italian dishes and watching sports and game shows on TV. Alex was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins, New York Yankees and most recently the WVU Mountaineers. He liked to travel, and most trips involved taking his daughter to ice skating competitions around the country.

In addition to his parents, Alex was preceded in death by his sister, Alberta Marie Pietanza in 2007. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice Awad of Lewes; his daughter, Gina Stewart and her husband Jeffrey of Finksburg, Md.; a grandson, Ryan Eichensehr; two sisters, Theresa Patterson and her husband Edwin of Waldorf, Md., and Catherine Caruso of LaPlata, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the excellent care and loving attention from the staff at Beebe Healthcare, the Wound Care Center and Delaware Hospice Center.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park, 7250 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, Md., where friends may visit beginning at 10:30 a.m., with a reception to follow at the same location. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.
