Philadelphia Eagles chaplain to speak at Sussex Prayer Breakfast June 9
Citizens from all over Sussex County will gather to pray for local communities at the Sussex County Prayer Breakfast at 6:45 a.m., Tuesday, June 9. Former player and current chaplain of the Philadelphia Eagles, the Rev. Dr. Herb Lusk II, will be the featured speaker. Lusk leads Greater Exodus Baptist Church in Philadelphia and has an inspiring message to share.
Lusk has been senior pastor of Greater Exodus Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pa., since 1982, and founder and CEO of its community outreach nonprofit organization, People for People Inc., since 1989.
Formerly known in the NFL as the “praying tailback” on the Philadelphia Eagles, for his signature drop to one knee and quick prayer after each of his touchdowns, he was recognized in two documentaries by ESPN and NFL Films as the first NFL player to kneel and pray after scoring. When asked what he was doing he simply replied, "I was just giving thanks!" Lusk left the team voluntarily at an early age at God’s leading, because he wanted to enter the ministry and do everything he could for those living in poverty in North Central Philadelphia.
Lusk and Greater Exodus Baptist Church were featured at the Republican National Convention in 2000. President Bush visited Greater Exodus Baptist Church in July 2001 as part of the promotion of the president’s faith-based initiatives. President Bush also selected People for People Inc. in 2004 from which to make a national announcement about his release of several billion dollars of relief to those countries hit hardest by HIV/AIDS. He did so because of the energetic work of Lusk in establishing the Stand for Africa Crusade for the same cause. Greater Exodus is blessed and highly visible locally, nationally and internationally because of the spiritual and compassionate leadership of Lusk.
During Lusk’s tenure at Greater Exodus, the church has grown from 17 active members to over 2,000, while countless thousands of others in need have benefited from the work the Lord is doing through the ministries of Greater Exodus, both locally and in Africa.
The Sussex County Prayer Breakfast is held each year to bring citizens and community leaders together to pray for this county and be inspired with a morning of music, ministry, and personal reflection. Ticket sales and community sponsorships from individuals, organizations, and businesses help support this annual event. Former County Councilman Dale Dukes is again volunteering his time to coordinate the event.
Tickets are available at www.SussexPrayerBreakfast.com for $20 each or $150 for a table of eight. Breakfast begins at 6:45 a.m. at Crossroad Community Church in Georgetown. The ministry and music portion of the program will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. For more info contact Kolby Dukes at 302-875-7551.
