The Cape Henlopen boys' lacrosse team opened the first round of the DIAA State Tournament by landing 17 goals, as the Vikings soared to the second round with a 17-3 win over the Eagles of Smyrna.

Senior James Ashby and sophomore Erik-Stephane Stancofski each scored four times while Jeb Monigle and Hank Coveleski had two. Kyle Orton, Brock Maloomian, Ethan Ghabra, Patrick Monigle and Ricky Brokaw each scored once.

"We shot really well in the game," said Cape head coach Jack Lingo. "And our face-off guys got us lots of possession time."

Senior Michael Hopkins assisted on three goals while Coveleski, Ashby, Orton, Sean Lally, Jacob C. Brown and Evan Gehman each had an assist.

The Vikings outshot the Eagles 35-18. Cape's Chris Argo stopped five shots in goal and Brandt Lookup had one save. Smyrna's Shane Helm stopped seven Vikings shots in goal.

"Everybody got a good amount of playing time," said Lingo. "That's a good thing."

The second-seeded Vikings will host Archmere Saturday, May 23 at 4 p.m. for the second round of the DIAA Tournament. It's a rematch of the April 25 game when the Auks handed the Vikings a 18-8 loss.

"We have to be ready to play," said Lingo. "Last time we weren't. It's the same scenario as last year. We played them in the quarterfinal at home and they went home with the loss. I hope we repeat it."
