May 27, 2015

The Stephen R. Lett Scholarship Fund Inc. of Rehoboth Beach announced that Cape Henlopen High School senior Mason Jones of Lewes will be the 2015 recipient of the fund’s $10,000 college scholarship award program. He will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Calif., in the fall.

The fund, created in 2009, each year awards the scholarship to a high school senior who demonstrates qualities of leadership, academic discipline and community awareness. The recipient will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

Jones has an interest in marine science and participated in an internship at the College of Marine Science at the University of Delaware, studying microbial oceanography, paleo and currents oceanography. He joined a four-day research cruise on the vessel Hugh R. Sharp, and was a team captain for the National Ocean Science Bowl. He is a member of the Honor Society at Cape Henlopen High School and is a scholar athlete. He played varsity golf for four years, earning most valuable player honors on the team in 2013 and 2014. He also played junior varsity and varsity soccer.

He is a member of the Delaware Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. The fund was founded by the members of Kings Creek Country Club in honor of Stephen R. Lett’s service to the club as president.  Lett said, “With the high cost of a college education today, we are pleased that our tournament attracts so many players and sponsors who want to make a difference in a young person’s life. It’s a great tournament for a really good cause.”

Any high school senior is eligible for consideration if they are nominated by a member or employee of Kings Creek Country Club. The nominee does not have to be affiliated with the club and can reside outside Delaware. An independent selection committee reviews all nominations and selects one recipient each year. Each recipient may be entitled to receive scholarship funds in all four years of their undergraduate studies.

The primary fundraising source for the Lett scholarship fund is the Lett’s Play Golf” charity golf tournament held each year at Kings Creek Country Club. This year’s tournament will be held Friday, July 24. Kings Creek Head Golf Professional Kevin Wiest said, “The Steve Lett Scholarship Fund tournament is always one of the most exciting events of the season. Last year, 111 players joined the best-ball format event with some excellent and competitive rounds of golf.” For more information, go to www.lettscholarshipfund.com.
