English bell ringing will be Summer Spirituality Series topic June 25
As part of the Summer Spirituality Series, St. Peter's Minister of Music T.J. Thomas will present English Bell Ringing: Towers to Ensembles, a tour of English bell ringing, at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 25, in the church parish hall, 211 Mulberry St. in Lewes.
From its monastic origins to tower change ringing, to the 20th century handbell ensemble, bells have been used throughout the Christian tradition as a means of calling the faithful to worship. In addition to learning historical information, attendees will have the opportunity to pick up a bell and learn the basics of ringing.
Prior to coming to St. Peter's, Thomas served as interim director of music at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit in Emmaus, Pa. During his undergraduate career he served on the music staff at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Pro-Cathedral in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., under the direction of Canon Mark Laubach. He is an active member of the Royal School of Church Music in America. Thomas functions as assistant music manager for the King’s College Course every summer. He is also active in the American Guild of Organists and the Association of Anglican Musicians. Thomas received his bachelor’s degree in music from Marywood University, Scranton, Pa.
The Summer Spirituality Series will be held at 7 p.m. every Thursday evening through Labor Day. All presentations are free and open to the public. Fellowship and ice cream cones will follow the presentation. For more information, call 302-645-8479 or go to www.stpeterslewes.org.
