First State Work Camp coming to Sussex June 21-27
Mariners Bethel United Methodist Church, C.R.A.S.H. (Creating Revolution And Saving Hearts) Youth Ministries is hosting First State Work Camp 2015. Camp will be held June 21-27. Campers will be staying and staging the work site at John M. Clayton Elementary School in Dagsboro.
Fourty-one elderly, handicapped, and lower-income homeowners will benefit from the work of a projected 500 teenage and adult youth leader volunteers from all over the United States. The Workcamp will provide free home repairs through the Group Cares (formerly Group Workcamps Foundation) program, sponsored locally by Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church.
The Workcampers will sleep on classroom floors, eat in the cafeteria, and enjoy evening programs in the gym. This service to the community would be impossible without the cooperation of John M. Clayton Elementary School and the Indian River School Board. Group Cares will reimburse all costs to the lodging facility.
Group Cares is a nonprofit, interdenominational Christian volunteer home-repair organization headquartered in Loveland, Colo. This summer, almost 25,000 young people and adults will participate in 36 workcamps in communities across the United States.
Each Workcamp throughout the nation, teenagers and adults - all members of church youth groups - volunteer a week of their time to repair homes throughout the community. This represents about 12,000 hours of volunteer labor - with a total nationwide economic impact of over $300,000 said Bruce Mears, youth leader at Mariner’s Bethel.
“These really are remarkable young people,” said Jeff Thompson of Group Cares. “Each one is actually paying for the privilege of working in the community. Workcamp registration fees are used to cover our costs for food, insurance, and building materials.”
Nightly Praise Services will be held at 7:30 p.m., in the John M. Clayton gymnasium. All are welcome to join the worship or volunteer to help with the day to day work.
Mariners Bethel UMC loves to serve the community. The church is located at 81 Central Ave., Ocean View, and everyone is invited to visit and join the church family. Call 302-539-9510 for details.
