Open Beach is an innovative, contemporary worship service at 7 p.m. every Tuesday on the beach at Dagsworthy Street in Dewey Beach. It features contemporary Christian and popular music by local band Changing Tides, a bonfire, worship and s'mores.
Organizers say the mission of Open Beach is bringing God to where people are, and it offers a sense of community that is on full display each week. The event aims to bring God to where people are physically, but also mentally, emotionally and theologically. Because it is recognized that not everyone can attend formal church services for various reasons, this is an opportunity to reach out to the community and share fellowship and worship in a more relaxed, convenient, informal location whose beauty is appreciated by everyone - the beach.
As the Rev. Kody Witt of Rehoboth says, “God loves us all. He invites us all, and he died for us all. There are no stipulations. That is why this is Open Beach. There are no borders or walls. Come as you are, and let’s create a community that we and God can be proud of.”
Childcare and children’s activities are available each week during the Open Beach service, and refreshments are available afterwards for those who want to enjoy the bonfire and fellowship. Parking is free in Dewey Beach from 5 to 11 p.m. every Tuesday.
