Cape wrestlers take Lake 62-9 in Henlopen Conference matchup

Vikings garner nine pins in win

After starting with loses at 220 and 285, the Vikings squad got on track and rolled through 11 straight weight classes to sink the Spartans 62-9 before a packed and vocal crowd at Lake Forest.

Cape got pins from Anthony Caruso at 113, Gabe Jacquet at 120, Max Norquest at 126, Vinnie Diego at 138, Jose Ascencio at 145, Cory Lawson at 160, Chris Handlin at 170, Holden Kammerer at 182 and Joel Torres at 195.

Dante Jacquet grappled to a 28-9 tech fall at 152, while junior Justin Wright made a SportsCenter highlight reversal move with 10 seconds to go to take a 6-5 victory at 126. Neither team had a 106 wrestler.

"Our guys wrestled really well," said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. "We went out and controlled the match. I'm very pleased with our performance."

Cape travels to Millersville, Pa., Friday and Saturday, Dec.11-12 for the tough Penn Manor Invitational Wrestling Tournament.

Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
