Full Weekend of Holiday Events Planned; Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral Scheduled for Monday

September 1, 2021

The traditional summer season officially comes to an end this weekend at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, with one final three-day blowout over Labor Day Weekend.

It seems like we say this every year, but man did the summer every fly by! But with the kids back in school and the year's first football games happening this weekend, it's a sure sign that autumn is almost upon us.

But, it ain't over just yet! The holiday weekend features a wide selection of popular local festivals and gatherings, so head outdoors this weekend for one final good time during the Summer of 2021.

As a preview, be sure to stay tuned to our blog in coming weeks as both "Fall Festival Season" and "Locals Summer" officially kick off once Labor Day is in the rear view mirror.

Okay, back to this weekend's festivities. We begin with what is likely the final event of the summer, and that's Monday's "funeral" in Bethany Beach.

Keep reading for much more of this weekend's scheduled activities. And have a great holiday weekend at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, or wherever you happen to be over the next few days.

Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral (September 6)

It’s that time of year again when we say goodbye to the Summer of 2021 and begin looking forward to the Summer of 2022 and the next traditional summer season at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

This year marks the 35th year that this family-friendly satirical event has taken place in Bethany Beach.

The event begins with a “private wake” at 5 p.m., followed by a solemn procession down the Bethany Beach Boardwalk at 5:30.

The procession involves "mourners" who carry a casket with a mannequin representing the Summer of 2021 from the north end of the boardwalk to the bandstand.

Music this year is provided by three separate Dixieland jazz bands, the Dixie Cats, the Jazz Funeral Irregulars and the Downtown Dixieland Band.

Attendees are encouraged to get into the spirit by wearing black and preparing to say their goodbyes to the Summer of 2021.

Jellyfish Festival (September 4-5)

This Saturday and Sunday features the 2021 Jellyfish Festival in Ocean City, to be held on the beach at North Division Street.

And while the event features the two days of fantastic music normally associated with Jellyfish, this year's attendees will also be able to enjoy all sorts of different activities at the "Tentacle Village."

Three blocks long, the village features cornhole tournaments, a bicycle zone, a secondary stage, a spikeball tournament, vendors, artists, activies and a craft beer fest (see below for more).

Featured acts at this year's festival include Anthony Gomes, the Derek Woods Band and Ted Bowne.

Beach Goes Red, White & Blue (September 4)

The Rehoboth Beach Bandstand is the place to be this Saturday, September 4, as the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce presents the 2021 “Beach Goes Red, White and Blue” festivities from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

This fifth annual celebration pays tribute to area police officers, firefighters, paramedics and members of the military who serve the public regularly and don’t always receive the recognition they so greatly deserve.

Scheduled activities include demonstrations from local first responders, a children's activity table, an antique military display, reenactors from Fort Miles, patriotic face painting, a 50/50 raffle, K-9 dogs, a kid's boot camp, live musical performances and much more.

All activities will be held at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand. Visit the event website here for much more on this Year’s “Beach Goes Red, White and Blue.”
