20th RD Democratic Committee to meet Feb. 21 in Lewes
Mayor Ted Becker of Lewes and Mayor Ted Kanakos of Milton are the guest speakers at the Thursday, Feb. 21 meeting of the RD 20 Democratic Committee. The “Two Teds” will be teaming up to discuss what it is like to be mayor of a small, historical town in the rapidly growing Cape Region. The meeting will be at Fish On Restaurant, 17300 Village Main Blvd., Lewes, with committee members and guests gathering at 5:30 p.m. for refreshments and dinner (optional) followed at 6 p.m. by the Becker and Kanakos panel discussion. The RD 20 Democratic Committee welcomes the public.
Becker has been a member of the Lewes City Council since May 2004, and was appointed deputy mayor and treasurer in June 2011. He was elected mayor in May 2014. Becker bought a home in Lewes in 1981, and moved to the town full time in 2000. He has served on many local and statewide boards, and currently is the president of the Sussex County Association of Towns, the chair of the Association of Coastal Towns, and a member of the Beebe Medical Foundation board. Also, Becker is a managing partner of Stewart Becker Properties in Lewes. Previously, he worked as a program manager for the U.S. Division of Special Education, the U.S. Department of Education. In addition, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1978-96.
Kanakos moved to Milton in 2003 and has served twice on the planning and zoning commission, on the boards of the Historical Preservation and the Ordinance and Review Committee. He was elected to Milton Town Council in 2015 and elected mayor in 2016. Kanakos has been a member of and held numerous leadership positions in nonprofit and community organizations. After selling his company, he retired to Lewes in 1996, where he was the co-founder, vice president and director of education for the Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation. Kanakos has also lectured extensively on the role of lightships in U.S. maritime history and has written for the Lewes Historical Society’s annual review.
Following their presentation, RD 20 Democratic Committee will conduct its monthly business meeting. Registered Democrats are welcome to attend.
