29 runners complete three races in three days

The Seashore Striders Triple Crown Series was held last weekend, with three races in three days in three towns. A total of 29 runners completed the challenge from start to finish, a new record.

The Georgetown Library 5K kicked off the series June 15. It continued June 16 with Irish Eyes 5k and finished with the popular Father’s Day 5K June 17.

Qualifiers include the following runners: Alyssa Simon, Bennett Brumbley, Carla Yngve, Caroline Fitzpatrick, Cathy Haut, Connie Marshall, David Balash, David Hart, Heather Marvin, Jack Noel, Jack Vassolotti, Jackie Quigley, James Harden, Jen Perry, Jennifer Murray, Jerri Fleetwood, Jim Marvin, Jimmy Harden, John Yanacek, Karen Zubrowski, LeeAnn Waltz, Matthew Klapak, Nina Smeltzer, Rebekah Yanacek, Richard Tikiob, Sandra Chambers, Sean Chambers, Terry Nechay, Wild Bill.

“I love the Triple Crown! It’s such a cool series!” said runner Carla Yngve.  

Terry Nechay added: “This was three days of fun. It’s a lot of work for you and your team, but totally enjoyable for us!”

40 runners tackle Irish Eyes 6-Pack

A new record of 40 runners completed all six races in the annual Irish Eyes 6-Pack Series that was held over the past few months in Lewes, Rehoboth and Milton. 

The 40 qualifiers include the following: Mary Andrisani, Amanda Alexander, John Blackford, Bennett Brumbley, Sean Chambers, John Dowling, Marian Dowling, Jay Epstein, Jill Extract, Robert Fitzgerald, Jerri Fleetwood, Terry Gricher, Cathy Haut, Tracey LeDoux, Connie Marshall, Jim Marvin, Laurie Milnes, Jennifer Murray, John Neal, Terry Nechay, Jack Noel, Georgette O’Cone, Nicholas O’Cone, Jen Perry, Mark Pinkus, Jackie Quigley, Deborah Rementer, Jan Saeger, Kurt Saeger, Linda Schwartz-Chi, Alyssa Simon, Nina Smeltzer, Chris Stanley, Richard Tikiob, Mardiny Ung, Jack Vassalotti, LeeAnn Waltz, Jules Woodall,  Carla Yngve and Jonathan Zubrowski.

The series is a popular challenge among the local running community, with Irish Eyes jackets going to all the qualifiers. Irish Eyes was the host of the series, with Delaware Highway Safety as the main sponsor. Special thanks to Zoggs Restaurant of Rehoboth Beach, which hosted both Rehoboth races in the series.   

“Great job everyone and what dedication. Wish I could have made the list this year, but glad you all got it done,” said runner Martin Rodriguez.

Jack does it again

Turning 80 has been a nice surprise for Jack Huxtable, as the fun-loving runner has broken the Delaware State 5K record three times so far this summer. In the crowd of nearly 400 runners at the Father’s Day 5K, Jack hit the line in 27:51.9 to break his 28:10.7 record, which broke his 28:57.5 record, which broke John Button’s 31:55 set in 2014. Jack does not say too much about the achievement, and it’s very apparent Jack does not run for the fame, the trophies or the records. Jack races for reasons like friends, family, fun and a healthy lifestyle. Will the 27:51.9 go any lower? Only time will tell. Jack will have more chances to lower the record on certified courses of July 14, July 22 and Aug. 4 in Striders Series events.

Dave Reynolds Biathlon 

The annual Dave Reynolds Swim/Run Biathlon will be held Sunday, July 1, at the Rehoboth Beach Patrol headquarters off Baltimore Avenue. The race will begin at 8 a.m. with a half-mile swim before running a 5K to North Shores and back. Divisions will include the Open, Team, Clydes and Fillys with awards going to the top three finishers in each age group. There will be a packet pickup Friday, June 29, at Rehoboth Beach Running Company, 301 Rehoboth Ave., from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach. There will be no race-day registration.
