ACLU of Delaware to meet online July 15

July 9, 2020

ACLU of Delaware will host its annual meeting via Zoom at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 15.

The event will also be livestreamed on Facebook, but people must RSVP to receive the Zoom meeting link.

Flattening the Curve of Inequity will be the theme, with a focus on the ACLU’s work on issues including criminal justice reform, education equity and voting rights.

One year after the Smart Justice Campaign successfully advocated for significant criminal justice reform in the General Assembly, Delaware is still far from ending mass incarceration and addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

Meanwhile, Delaware’s public education system continues to suffer from underfunding, inequitable distribution of existing funding, and disciplinary practices that hurt students. The ACLU of Delaware is continuing its legal challenge to the state’s school funding system, even through the pandemic. Leaders will offer a look at what’s next in this ground-breaking case.

These struggles in criminal justice and education policy are occurring in an election year in which voting is threatened not only by suppression but also COVID-19, creating a need for rapid changes to electoral operations and infrastructure. ACLU of Delaware is advocating for safe, free and fair elections for all – including those with felonies and different abilities, and those historically marginalized at the polls.
