Athletes of Week Aug. 22

August 22, 2025
Bennett Brumbley

Bennett’s Brumbley grandparents, Rhonda and Ronal, attended almost every event, following their young athlete from running to wrestling. They beamed with pride after every race and every match. A month ago, Mom Mom Rhonda Brumbley passed away unexpectedly. Kevin Brumbley wrote, “Bennett wrestled in the Pin Cancer National Tournament today in honor of his mom mom who we lost on July 21st. Due to your generous donations, Bennett was able to be one of the top 5 fundraisers for the tournament raising $2750 towards cancer research. Bennett went 4-1 on the day and brought home 3rd place with his only loss of the day being in the semifinals to a very tough wrestler. His Mom Mom had the best seat in the house today and I’m sure she was as proud as ever watching her boy do his thing on the mat, thank you Pin Cancer for putting on a great tournament.” Bennett ran in the Rehoboth Beach Lifeguard 5K Aug. 10, clocking a 19:57 time. He will run cross country in the fall before transitioning into wrestling season, where he is considered a state title contender.

Amara Fruchtman

The second-oldest of five Fruchtman sisters, this rising Cape junior and honors student has proven to be the real deal on the hardwood for volleyball as well as the turf for the Vikings girls’ lacrosse team. This is her second season as a primary backcourt six rotation player for the Vikings volleyball squad. "Amara continues to display an innate understanding of the game," said Cape head coach Tyler Coupe. "She has wildly quick reflexes with great control of her platform. She serves with effective consistency that will ideally force opponents out of system. The control of her platform and her overhand setting give her the chance to run our offense decently in system even when our setter takes the first ball. We’re all excited to watch her grow." She was All-Conference in volleyball as well as All-Conference and All-State on the state champion lax team in 2025. In her spare time, she likes relaxing on the beach.

Grace Heers

A hardworking, easygoing rising junior and honors student, Grace is a midfielder for the Cape field hockey team who also plays defense, but she admits to preferring the midfield. “I played varsity last year but didn’t get a lot of playing time,” Grace said. “I’m hoping that changes this season.” Grace also runs indoor and outdoor track, and was on the 4-by-200 team that placed seventh in the state last year for Division 1 schools. When asked about her assets, Grace said, “I guess my speed and my stick work. I really love the sport and enjoy being on such a good team.” Coach Kate Austin said, “Grace worked extremely hard over the summer on the field and in the weight room. She is eager to improve her play, and her attention to detail has allowed her to build a really solid foundation with her skill set. She is strong and composed on the ball and has good vision to distribute in the midfield or backfield. Grace is driven and competitive, but always has a smile on her face at practice.“ Her older sister Alivia Heers, a graduated senior softball player, will be at Saint Joe’s next year.

Anna Stancofski

A Cape graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore with a double major in biology and computer science, Anna completed her first Olympic distance triathlon last weekend in Luray, Va. Anna finished third in her age group and is training for her first half ironman Saturday, Sept. 20, in Jones Beach, Long Island, N.Y. Anna is applying to medical school now to start in July 2026, while locally she’s volunteering at Beebe (emergency room) and volunteer coaching hockey at Cape. Anna will leave in September, as she was awarded a scholarship by the French government to teach English in a French high school near the town of Avignon in the south of France for seven months, from Oct. 1 until the end of April.
