Athletes of the Week Dec. 8

December 8, 2023
Patrick Donahue

Last wrestling season, Patrick Donahue went from JV state champion to Henlopen Conference varsity 215-pound champion in a span of two weeks. He was voted the Outstanding Wrestler in the Henlopen Conference meet after beating three higher seeds with a combined record of 95-30. Patrick went on to place fourth in the state tournament at 215 pounds. Coach Chris Mattioni: “Patrick  dedicated lots of time this off-season attending practice, lifting, competing and going to camps. He is one of our team captains. Last weekend, he finished third (215) in the challenging Southern Slam at Eastside High School in Taylors, S.C. There were 29 wrestlers in his bracket. He finished the tournament 6-1 with four pins, a major decision and a decision.” In addition to wrestling, Patrick excels in honors and AP classes. His goal is to attend one of the service academies.

Geordan Downing

The Cape boys’ basketball team’s 70-48 win over Delmarva Christian was the varsity debut for freshman Geordan Downing. He splashed onto the scene with a three to open the Vikings' scoring. Shortly after, he drained another one. Downing ended the night with 17 points on the strength of five three-pointers. The freshman was a menace on defense as well, collecting three steals to jump-start the Vikings’ transition game. He enjoys being active and talking on defense. The loudest cheers from the bleachers belonged to Downing's family, who sat courtside and supported the young man any way they could. With every touch he had, Royals players and coaches shouted “shooter!” to the delight of Downing. The shooting lab isn't the only place Downing likes to work, as he enjoys conducting experiments in his science classes and going full bar in NBA2K.

Jayden Dukes

During the Cape boys’ basketball team’s season-opening 70-48 victory over Delmarva Christian, Dukes led the Vikings in minutes and produced a well-rounded line of nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and one steal. The junior effectively communicated with his teammates while using his tremendous footwork and athleticism to remain active on both ends of the court. He said it felt really good to contribute on both ends of the court, and he was happy to help his team. He said he enjoyed cleaning the glass because he knew it would generate easy looks in the transition game. Ball is life for Jayden, as he plays travel ball for WeR1 and enjoys playing NBA2K or shooting around when he gets the chance. The die-hard Los Angeles Lakers fan's favorite subject is math. He enjoys the musical stylings of NBA YoungBoy.

Wilson Ingerski

Wilson fielded a low snap in the fourth quarter of the state championship football game at the University of Delaware and was off to open spaces, sprinting down the Cape sidelines 25 yards for a first down that led to Cape’s final touchdown of the season, a Jameson Tingle fourth-down pass to reliable Lucas Stevenson. “Obviously, we should have run more fake punts,” said coach Mike Frederick two days later with a wry smile. Ingerski was named first-team all-state kicker; he had field goals on the season of 40, 38, 25 and 23 yards. He averaged 35 yards on punts with a long of 54 yards. He was 41 of 43 on PATs, as two were blocked. Wilson had 3,802 yards on kickoffs, with 48 of 64 going for touchbacks. He had three tackles and two saved touchdowns. “He just had a heck of a year,” Frederick said. “He’s an athlete and a gamer.”
