He is listed at 6-feet-3-inches and 210 pounds. His dream has always been to play in the NBA. Bowie State is a Division II-level program competing in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Tyler Costello
Tyler wrestles in the 285-pound weight class but he’s only 225, at most. He always shows up then locks up and has a carefully cautious style. One momentum shift, and it’s IHOP short stack, pass the syrup. Tyler closed out a wild match at Sussex Tech Feb. 7, with a pin against an opponent 65 pounds heavier. Coach Chris Mattioni: “Tyler has been wrestling the best he has all season the last few weeks. He kept matches close against William Penn and Delaware Military Academy. He had big wins against Caesar Rodney, Lake Forest and Sussex Tech. He went to overtime with Smyrna.” His current record is 12-13 with eight pins. He is an honors, AP and Academic Challenge student. “He helps with the team GPA,” Mattioni said.
Joe Coveleski
Joe is the youngest of six children of Pete and Stacy. He was a Cape Gazette Athlete of the Week on the day he was born. His oldest sister Samantha took his photo in the maternity ward. Joe had a blended athletic career at Cape, being the starting quarterback in the fall of his senior year and starting on attack for the lacrosse team in the spring. Joe played in his first collegiate game Feb. 3 for the Division II Florida Tech Panthers and rang the bell twice, scoring a pair of goals in an 18-10 loss to Rollins College. Journey on, Baby Joe. He is majoring in engineering. Coveleskis who have played the quarterback position include John, Pete, Josh, Max, Hank and Joe. Florida Tech plays in the Sunshine State Conference. The team plays at Limestone University Saturday, Feb. 10.
Patrick Donahue
Patrick is a hammer up top at 215 pounds for the Cape wrestling team. He is the counterbalance to Austin Guerrieri down low at 106. Sussex Tech was rolling toward an upset special Feb. 7, but when Patrick pinned his man, it was all over. Coach Chris Mattioni: “Patrick is one of our vocal team leaders and captain. He is one of the hardest workers on the team. He is a big part of our team's success; he has been wrestling very well all season long. He improved to 34-3 on the season with a team-leading 24 pins. His last seven victories have all been by pin, which has contributed to the team victories.” “We need more consistency up and down the lineup,” Patrick said. "We've been in some close matches the last two weeks. It seems like we were wrestling every other night.”
