Harper Mamele
A junior AP and honors student at Cape, this 6-foot-1 outside hitter has had quite the week, knocking down 15 kills and bumping 10 digs against Ursuline Academy, then recording 30 kills and 17 digs against Sussex Central. “Harper had great back-to-back matches versus Ursuline and Central," said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. "She combined for 45 kills on .331%. She is super efficient for a left pin attacker. She really diversified how and where she attacked, giving her an advantage to keep defenses guessing. Also her commitment to her defense is such a huge improvement from last year and it’s making her much more impactful and effective.” Harper is the class treasurer. She also stays busy with DECA, Honor Society and Morgan's Message. She lends her talents to the Cape track team in the spring. When not on the hardwood, she plays beach volleyball for the Dewey Beach Sandsharks and travel volleyball for the Premier Edge in Wilmington.
Bailey Masten
Bailey is straight out of Milford High School, where she was a freshman starter in field hockey and eighth-grade starter in lacrosse. And she’s a Dewey summer kid. Bailey could always roll smart and fast. A three-time first-team all-state field hockey player, Bailey was also a three-year captain of the Milford lacrosse team. Bailey is now a freshman on the field hockey team for the Towson University Tigers. Towson is 3-3 on the season having beaten Loch Haven, Sacred Heart and Queens. Bailey had an assist in her first game, a loss to Appalachian State. It was a game where senior Sam Connors (Cape) had two assists for App State. Bailey’s younger sister Molly is currently playing field hockey for Milford. Bailey is majoring in special education/psychology. Towson plays at VCU Friday, Sept. 19. Her Milford teammate Hannah Zimmerman is a freshman at VCU.
Ryan Moody
In preseason, Sussex Academy cross country coach Jay Diaz said his senior would turn some heads this year, and that is exactly what Ryan has done. In the Seahawks' first meet against Delmar Sept. 10, Ryan cleared the field by more than a minute with a time of 16:28. One week later, he shocked spectators when he burst from the woods at about the 15-minute mark on his way to a personal best of 16:07. The senior worked hard over the summer and trains every day to make the progress he has made. Although still undecided, he thinks he would like to run in college, and is leaning toward studying criminal justice or business. Moody began running with the Seashore Striders at a young age and suggests that any young runners looking to improve should be consistent in their training.
Riley Moriarty
Riley won the first race of her career and set a personal record of 20:38 in Sussex Academy cross country's opening meet against Delmar Sept. 10. The junior followed that up by besting the field in the Sept. 17 tri-meet against Indian River and Delmar at Sandhill Fields. She battled muddy conditions and thousands of gnats to take first. She debated wearing spikes, but opted for sneakers and conquered the loss of friction as it came. Riley began running in sixth grade, and relishes the chance to be a role model for girls the way runners older than her were. When she is not running, she enjoys being outside studying science and the environment, and prefers vacations that put her more in touch with nature. Riley is also one of the top players on the girls' soccer team that won the Henlopen South and championship game this past spring.
