Attorney General Kathy Jennings honored by Sussex Progressive Democrats

October 6, 2022

Supporters of Attorney General Kathy Jennings turned out in large numbers to show their appreciation and to support her candidacy for reelection. The Oct. 2 event at the Lewes Public Library was organized by the Progressive Democrats of Sussex County.

As he introduced Jennings. Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend, D-Newark, talked about her courage to take on the tough cases and fight corruption, even in her own party. Townsend cited Jennings’ work with the General Assembly that led to the passage of gun legislation that has made Delaware a safer place, and her initiatives in making the justice system more equitable for everyone.

Jennings credited the strong team in her office for the accomplishments of the past four years. She cited Delaware’s refusal to accept the original deal with Perdue Pharma and the Sackler family for their role in the opioid epidemic. By hanging tough, Delaware and a few other states were able to add an extra $1 billion to the settlement.

Jennings also cited the ongoing struggle to protect women’s reproductive rights, and she thanked Townsend for his foresight in sponsoring legislation in 2017 that ensured a woman’s constitutional right to abortion in Delaware. She spoke of her office’s successful lawsuit against the City of Seaford’s anti-abortion ordinance. She asked attendees to help spread the word about Delaware's Abortion Hotline, which provides Delawareans and people visiting the state with legal information and resources about accessing abortion.

Jennings also cited her office’s success in winning the 2020 lawsuit filed by the GOP that would have thrown out 80,000 vote-by-mail ballots. But she warned that a citizen’s most basic right, the right to vote, is still under attack. Jennings told the group she ran to take on the tough fights, and promised to continue that work when reelected Nov. 8.

Joining Jennings at the event were Democratic candidates Treasurer Colleen Davis, Lydia York for state auditor, Russ Huxtable for Senate District 6, Stell Parker Selby for Representative District 20, and Keegan Worley for Representative District 4.

Joanne Cabry, Progressive Democrats chair, thanked all of the candidates for stepping up and putting their names on the ballot. She stressed the importance of strong and principled leaders at every level of government.
