Austen Cave captures win at inaugural Sposato 5K

Five women finish in top 8

Delmar cross country runner Austen Cave, 15, dominated another Cape Region race, easily cruising to the win in the inaugural Taste of Sposato Wine 5K run Oct. 2 in Milton. Cave’s time of 17:50 was more than two minutes faster than second-place finisher Andrew Gorlich, 31, of Milton, 20:09. Finishing third was masters winner 41-year-old Gerard Jones of Milford in 20:27.

Fourth through eighth place featured a wave of fast females. Taking the women’s title and fourth overall was Cat Volmer, 32, of Columbia, Md., with a time of 21:22. She was followed by masters winner Meryl Ludwig, 50, of Mount Airy, Md., 21:49; Carli Murphy, 30, Colorado Springs, Colo., 22:07; Jennifer Lee, 28, of Rehoboth, 22:46; and Meredith Lockwood, 13, of Rehoboth, 23:40.

Rounding out the overall top 10 were Eddie Houch, 10, of Rehoboth, 23:47, and Mike Firch, 47, of Milford in 23:47. 

A total of 74 people broke 30 minutes in the race. The inaugural race attracted 201 runners to new course that begins and ends at Sposato Landscaping on Hudson Road in Milton. 

The race benefited the Sposato Scholarship, which is awarded to a Delaware Technical Community College student who is studying in the landscape and ornamental horticulture program.
