Barbara L. Baker (Caskey), devoted mother

July 14, 2020

Barbara L. Baker, 78, of Rehoboth Beach passed away Saturday, July 11, 2020, at her home, after a two-year courageous battle with esophageal cancer. She was born Oct. 3, 1941, in Dover, N.J.

Barbara was raised in Mine Hill, N.J., and graduated from Dover High School in 1959. While attending Dover High, she met and eventually married her high school sweetheart, Donald Baker Sr. Sept. 1, 1959. Even though they divorced after 25 years of marriage, he was and always will be the love of her life.

Barbara worked as an Insurance policy processor for 27 years. Her career began in 1982 at Warwick Insurance Company in Morris Plains, N.J., and ended in 2009 at AIG Insurance Company in Parsippany, N.J., upon her retirement. Barbara’s co-workers were more than just friends’, they became her second family.

She was a longtime member and former president (1976-77) of the Roxbury Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary in Succasunna, N.J.

Barbara moved to Rehoboth Beach in 2011. She loved to go for car rides, sit on the back deck of her home, and talk with her dear friends and neighbors. It became known as “Barb’s Porch.” Her love for birds and flowers, especially a cardinal, was remarkable. Most of all, she treasured her children and her home.

She is survived by her five children: Russell Baker of Rehoboth Beach, Donald Baker Jr. and his partner Karen of Georgetown, Robert Baker and his wife Patricia of Mine Hill, N.J., Shari, and her husband George of Jacksonville, N.C., and Michael Baker of Rehoboth Beach; her former husband, Donald Baker Sr. and his wife Gloria of Freeport, Fla.; her brother, Louis Caskey of Landing, N.J.; her seven grandchildren; her 23 great-grandchildren; and many dear friends. She was an amazing mother and friend to all she met and will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.

A funeral service will be held Monday, July 20, at 3:30 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 1 p.m.
