January 8, 2026

Beacon Middle School’s eighth-grade Math League team has been undefeated this season, competing against Fred Thomas Middle School and Selbyville Middle School.

Beacon’s eighth-grade Math League team enjoys the challenges posed by the league problems, and its members have excelled and improved during each event, scoring 10 points in their first meet, 12 points in the second and 15 points in the third.

After the third meet, held at Mariner Middle, eighth-graders Zach Day and Gavin Serman were tied for first place for the most individual points with 12 points each. Chloe Yeung was in second with 6 points, and Lila Lanouette was in third with 5 points.

Beacon’s seventh-grade Math League team is composed of four sixth-graders. The seventh-grade team finished in second place at the third meet with 6 points. “Our sixth-graders work very hard and have improved each meet, going from not scoring any points the first meet to scoring 6 points at the third meet, beating teams from Mariner Middle and Fred Thomas Middle,” said coach Brian Walley. “Seeing the excitement that our teams have for math is such a great feeling. The fact that both teams have improved each event is amazing, and it just speaks to their effort and dedication.”

“Beacon’s Math League Team includes some of our brightest and strongest students. We are proud of their efforts, enthusiasm and dedication to academic development,” said coach Sarah Richards. Beacon Middle School’s Math League teams are looking forward to the last meet in January and the eighth-grade team is getting ready for the state championships in March.
