Beacon girls’ basketball downs Mariner 52-29

February 9, 2022

The Beacon Middle School girls’ basketball team took district bragging rights Feb. 7, with a 52-29 victory over Mariner Middle School at the Cape gymnasium. Beacon moves to 10-0 on the season, while Mariner finishes its 2021-22 campaign at 7-2.

Beacon garnered 24 points from eighth-grader Amalia Fruchtman. Teammate Maya Yngve added 10 points, while Ally Diehl put up seven, and Mairead Rishko, Amara Feuchtman and Izzy Daniel each dropped three points. Haley Gamuciello also made a basket. The Beacon squad hit five three-pointers in the contest.

“This game was a display of great teamwork while using solid fundamental concepts,” said Beacon head coach Steve Re. “The girls have worked extremely hard all year and have continued to get better each day.”

Mariner was paced by eighth-grader Jurnee White with 10 points. Kiersten Smith added seven, while A'niyah Taylor and Madelyn Angil each dropped in six points.

“Coach [Jason] Feather and I are very proud of how hard the girls worked this season,” said Mariner head coach Katie Tingle. “From the first day of practice until now, they have shown tremendous growth and hopefully had fun doing it. The best quality of this team is that they never give up. There were a couple times this year when the other teams had the lead or started to come back from our lead and they could have hung their heads, but they kept fighting, and that was a big part of us being 7-2. To lose by 20 to your rival school is not what you want to do, but again, we were thrilled with their effort. We scored 29 points against Beacon, which no other team had done all season, so that is something the girls should be proud of.”

Beacon hosts Kirk Middle School Friday, Feb. 11, before finishing up its season at Dover Central Middle Saturday, Feb. 12.
