Beacon girls capture first in Delaware Middle School Classic

The Beacon Middle School girls’ track & field team kept the winning tradition going as they won the Delaware Middle School Classic by scoring 140 points on the night. Selbyville Middle School scored 103.50 for second, while Milford Central Academy scored 60 for third place. W.T. Chipman Middle was fourth with 50 points, and Dover Central Middle was fifth with 45 points. Mariner Middle scored 37 for sixth place, Postlethwait Middle scored 34 for seventh place, and Millsboro Middle scored 25.50 for eighth place.

For Beacon, the 37-point win came with only three champions in the meet, as Ainsley Rineer won the discus in 74-3, Kierrah Daniels won the shot put in 35-6 and Lily Noonan won the 1,600 meters in 5:59.99.   

Eighth-grader Noonan scored 22 points in the meet with a second-place photo finish in the 800 meters and a fourth-place finish in the triple jump. Little sis Erin Noonan, just a sixth-grader, finished second in the 1,600 meters in 6:15 and second in the triple jump to score 16 points in the meet. The Noonan girls combined to score 38 points by themselves.

Harper Marmele was third in the 800 meters in 2:57.69; she also finished second in the high jump at 4-6 and third in the long jump at 12-8 for a nice versatile night. Claudia Stazzone was third in the 400 meters in 1:12.85, while Isabel Mastrangelo was fourth in 1:13.02.

Beacon finished fourth in the 400m relay in 58.19 with the team of Mia Thompson, Leah Sheehan, Cora Emory and Mia Bender. The Beacon 800m relay team of Thompson, Mastrangelo, Shiloh O’Grady, and Bender was third in 2:06.84. O’Grady was also fourth in the 800 meters in 3:02.51, while Emma Thompson was fourth in the 1,600 meters in 6:39.77.

Marley Fyock was fifth in the long jump in 11-11 and third in the triple jump in 28-1. Zaigey Sheppard-Tunnell finished sixth in the shot put in 27-0 and sixth in the discus in 59-10.

Mariner Middle standout hurdler and sprinter Talia Pecoraro had a big day as she won the 55m hurdles in 9.32 and the 200m dash in 28.13, while qualifying in 27.83. Pecoraro also led off the fourth-place 800m relay team with Jurnee White, Naziyah Brisco, and Jada Furey finishing in 2:08.06.

The Mariner 400m relay of Brisco, White, Saniyah Green and Furey finished fifth in 58.53.

Postlethwait Middle School captured the boys’ team championship with 113 points, while Dover Central was close with 111 points. Selbyville finished third with 93 points, and fourth went to Beacon Middle with 78 points. Millsboro was fifth with 41 points, while Milford took sixth with 40. W.T. Chipman finished seventh with 11 points, while Mariner was eighth with 10 points.

Daveyonn Conquest of Beacon was third in the 200 meters in 24.47 and also finished fifth in the 100 meters in 12.12 and fifth in the 400 meters in 1:00.59 for a busy sprint day. Jamie Whitten of Beacon was fifth in the 400 meters in 1:00.95, and Beacon had three of the top six in the 800 meters to rack up some nice points. Seth Benjamin was second in the 800 meters in 2:21.47 and second in the 1,600 meters in 5:29.06, while Jamar Beasley was third in the 800 meters in 2:31.96. Aaron Tikiob was sixth in the 800 meters in 2:38.52 and also sixth in the 1,600 meters in 5:44.63. Beacon was fourth in the 400m relay in 51.03 with the team of Bernard Jones, Jorge Ruiz, David Garbanzo-Ruiz and Ryder Van Horn. The Beacon 800m relay team finished third in 1:50.63 with Jones, Beasley, Ruiz, and Carter Gibbons.  Ozmeer Daisey handled the jumps for Beacon, finishing second in the triple jump in 33-1 and fourth in the long jump in 17-0.  Ryan Andrew was fourth in the high jump at 4-10, while Tre Batson was sixth in the shot in 36-03.

Mariner’s Jason Baker scored third in the 1,600 meters with a nice race of 5:29.45, while Mariner took sixth in the 400m relay in 55:12.

Cape track off to conference championships

The boys’ and girls’ teams were set to compete at the Henlopen Conference Championships this Thursday and Friday at Lake Forest High School as the North and South teams will come together for 18 events of running, jumping and throwing. The Cape boys finished the season 5-2, while the Cape girls finished 6-1 and won the Northern Division Championship. Good luck, Vikings!
