Beacon students take part in national writing contest

Students at Beacon Middle School are being recognized for their creativity and storytelling after participating in the Young Writers USA Stranger Sagas creative writing competition.

Stranger Sagas is a national writing contest designed to inspire young writers, particularly middle and high school students, to craft imaginative stories in a very short format. The contest challenges students to write a mini-saga of 100 words or fewer, encouraging them to transform an ordinary idea into something strange, mysterious, thrilling or unexpected. Titles do not count toward the word limit, and all entries must be original works created by the students.

Through the competition, students practice concise storytelling and build confidence in their creative voices. They also have the opportunity to see their work published.

Dr. Christopher Maddox, eighth-grade English language arts teacher, said the format provides a unique and engaging challenge for students as they refine their writing skills. “Watching my eighth-graders enter this contest was incredibly rewarding,” said Maddox. “The 100-word format challenges them to think critically about word choice, structure and impact – skills we emphasize every day in our ELA classrooms. Students are building strong reading and writing habits, setting goals and taking ownership of their growth. This contest gives them an authentic audience and a real-world purpose for their writing, which makes the learning both meaningful and exciting.”

The contest aligns closely with classroom instruction by encouraging imagination, creative expression and purposeful writing. By crafting stories within a strict word limit, students learn to carefully select language and sharpen their storytelling techniques, skills that translate directly to stronger writing across all subjects.

Participation in contests like Stranger Sagas highlights Beacon’s commitment to fostering literacy, creativity and student voice while providing opportunities for students to share their work beyond the classroom walls.
