Believe in Tomorrow 5K at Big Chill
Scorching 90-degree heat greeted participants in the third annual Believe in Tomorrow 5K July 18, but the heat did not deter a few hundred runners who showed up at Big Chill Beach Club for the 6:30 p.m. evening start.
Nick Cruz finished first overall with a time of 16:40, and he was gasping for water as he crossed the finish line. Volunteers worked quickly to bring enough water to the finish for the thirsty competitors, who included both runners and walkers.
Believe in Tomorrow Foundation’s mission is to serve critically ill kids and families, most of whom are going through active cancer treatment, said Director of Business Management James Poisal.
The foundation has two programs: hospital housing and respite housing. In Delaware, the foundation sponsors primarily respite housing.
“We bring families to the beach, and we connect them with local restaurants and attractions so while they are here having a great time at the beach, they’re also enjoying all of the things we would do if we were on vacation,” Poisal said. Believe in Tomorrow has only a few staff members, and volunteers do much of the work, he said.
Poisal said the Believe in Tomorrow 5K is a way to raise awareness and funds for the foundation’s work. He said people of the Cape Region have responded and have been extremely kind and supportive. He also said that along with Big Chill Beach Club, local businesses have also been helpful and kind.
