Berry is a great choice for Veteran Affairs secretary

August 27, 2025

The following letter is in response to Gov. Matt Meyer nominating Brig. Gen. Karen Berry to be the state’s first secretary of Veterans Affairs.

This is a wonderful nomination by Gov. Matt Meyer. Veterans who have met and worked with retired Brig. Gen. Karen Berry know her dedication to fellow veterans.

Her education and teaching experience in Delaware schools has made her someone who understands our state from an educational perspective, but very important to those who serve is her military service, training and leadership, including boots on the ground in Afghanistan as deputy commander of the 335th Signal Command.

Her dedication and ongoing involvement with veterans for three decades not only in Delaware but also in Connecticut is well documented. This nomination by Gov. Meyer reassures Delaware's veterans of all conflicts that their needs will be a priority in the First State.

This nomination follows a two-year campaign by the Delaware Veterans Coalition, a registered lobbying organization established in 2011 to provide a voice for veterans. We applaud our elected officials for their bipartisan support during the campaign joined by veterans leaders across the state.

No one understands a veteran more than another veteran, and this legacy creation of a secretary of Veterans Affairs familiar with the service and sacrifice by the fewer than 1 percent of our fellow citizens and their families will mean more than many realize.
