April 22, 2021

A 10-run sixth inning boosted the Cape baseball team past Sussex Central 15-7 April 20 at Chris Short Field. The Vikings move to 8-1 on the season.

The game was back and forth throughout the first five innings before the Golden Knights took a 7-5 lead with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Then enter Cape freshman Gage Joseph, who delivered a triple to clear the bases. He went 2-for-4 in the game, driving in seven RBIs. The Vikings sent 16 players to the plate in the sixth.

Mason Kosc went 1-for-1 with a three-run double. Hunter Rauch went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Timmy Hitchcock went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Nick Cox had a hit to start the sixth-inning rally.

Ty Husbands went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and he also picked up the win on the mound. Josh Reinhold started for the home squad, going 5 1/3 innings, striking out five and giving up six hits.

“This is a very good win for us,” said Cape head coach Ben Evick. “We were back and forth, and the guys kept battling. We responded every time they went ahead. Josh threw well into a howling headwind, which can take its toll on pitchers. He threw some very competitive pitches. Ty Husbands did a nice job coming in relief and stealing the win. He was solid for 1 2/3 innings with four Ks. Mason Kosc came in to catch and hit a three-run double in the sixth inning as well. Gage absolutely scolded a ball over the center fielder’s head for the three-run triple that blew the sixth inning open for us.”

Offensively, Joseph finished with a single, triple, stolen base, and a run scored to go along with his seven RBIs.

Anthony Cannon led Central, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI. Cole Jester went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Brenden Anderson went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Chase Boyle went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Troy Morris went 1-for-3 and knocked in a run.

Anderson pitched four innings, giving up five runs while striking out four.

The Vikings will travel to Archbishop Spalding in Maryland for a game at noon, Saturday, April 24.
