Blue Sea Café serves up dinner on Second Street in Lewes
The Blue Sea Café in Lewes has brought a taste of something different to the dinner table.
The restaurant opened two years ago serving breakfast and lunch only until August, when dinner featuring Middle Eastern food began.
Owner Chris Becker had wanted to offer dinner earlier this summer, but getting set up took longer than she expected.
“We had to get all the recipes together and get all the equipment set up and get all the kitchen staff trained,” she said.
Becker said the café occupies a side of the building that was underused, especially in the evening.
“We thought why not come up with a menu no one else has so we’re not competing with anyone else, and we’re not competing with ourself,” she said.
Becker also owns Jerry’s Seafood, which occupies the other side of the building.
She said she consulted with people from throughout the Middle East to come up with ideas about foods to serve and to get recipes.
“We wanted to do something different because we thought people might like a change. Prices are a lot less than many other foods,” Becker said.
Appetizers and salads include many familiar items – ceviche, hummus, falafel, tabbouleh salad, stuffed grape leaves and artichoke heart salad. Prices range from $5 to $8.
Dinner entrees include lamb shish kabob, $15; spanikopeta, $7.50; moussaka, $7.50 and lahmajun – ground beef, tomato sauce, herbs and spices embedded in flat pita dough, rolled and topped with red onion and tomato, $15.
For those who might prefer something less exotic, the café offers a chicken dish, a pasta dish and tuna nicoise – seared tuna, a spring salad mix, nicoise olives, new potatoes, haricot vert, onions, fried capers, tomato and hardboiled egg with lemon vinaigrette dressing, $11.
“We try to keep it mostly Mediterranean, but we have things for some people who might not like trying something new,” Becker said.
An assortment of bottled and draft beers, wine and liquor are also available.
Dinner is served from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The restaurant is open daily. Blue Sea Café is at 108 Second St. For more information, phone 302-703-2161 or visit www.blueseacafe.com
