Brandywine Valley SPCA takes in Dorian-displaced pets

Animals arrived Sept. 3 from South Carolina

More than 300 animals evacuated from shelters set to be impacted by Hurricane Dorian have made their way to Delaware.

Brandywine Valley SPCA received two flights of animals from shelters in the Carolinas, where the now-Category 2 hurricane hit Sept. 5. The first flight, consisting of 200 animals arrived around 11:15 a.m., Sept. 3 at New Castle County Airport. The second flight arrived at Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown at 2 a.m., Sept. 4.

“The effort is to remove those animals from local shelters so that if there are animals displaced by hurricanes or other natural disasters, those pets have somewhere to go,” said Brandywine Valley Director of Operations Walter Fenstermacher.

Fenstermacher said the animals will be put up for adoption through Brandywine Valley SPCA and other affiliated shelters as far north as Maine. He said most of the animals, dogs and cats, were from shelters in South Carolina. Fenstermacher said animals staying with Brandywine Valley will receive veterinary care and spay/neuter operations at the Animal Rescue Center in Georgetown before being placed up for adoption.

“Being able to help other communities in need is one of the reasons we created the Animal Rescue Center,” he said. “To help animals affected by natural disasters, as well as animals that need behavior modification or have been victims of cruelty.”

Those interested in adoption can visit Brandywine Valley SPCA’s shelters on Route 113 in Georgetown, and in New Castle and West Chester. For more information, visit bvspca.org.
