Browseabout Books is a cornerstone of community

January 7, 2025

Kudos to the Cape Gazette and Jeffrey Fried (Dec. 6) for the profile on Susan Kehoe and Browseabout Books. Browseabout is more than a bookstore; it's a crown jewel of Rehoboth Beach. From its outdoor seating and iconic murals to its takeaway window, eclectic collection of games, gifts and treats, and selection of local and national newspapers, Browseabout offers far more than just books; it offers connection. During the pandemic, we passed by Browseabout every morning and invariably saw a group of prominent locals (usually including Steve Crane) gathered in front of Browseabout speaking their mind.

The article rightly highlights the challenges local bookstores face in competing with online giants and national chains. While those companies offer convenience, they will never replicate the magic and community glue that Browseabout provides.

Joni Mitchell’s lyrics come to mind: “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone?” Let’s not wait until it’s too late to appreciate what we have in Browseabout. Local treasures like this don’t thrive on love alone. They need our support.

So, as you consider your next good read, think local. Let’s ensure Browseabout continues to thrive as a cornerstone of our community for years to come.
