Camp Mont prepares future soccer stars

Cape boys’ soccer players tune up skills before preseason begins

Nearly 50 high school players took part in Camp Mont at Cape Henlopen High School’s Bermuda fields Aug. 4-8. The camp allowed players in grades 9 to 12 prepare for the upcoming 2025 season with hall-of-fame coach Gary Montalto. 

Montalto, who coached at Arlington High School in New York, has an impressive resume that includes 20 boys’ league titles, 13 Section 1 titles and five state championship appearances, winning three. On the girls’ side, he garnered seven league titles and three Section 1 titles. His total coaching record is 575-89-41. He was named National Coach of the Year after the 2006 season by the United Soccer Coaches Association. 

He is assisted by Cape teacher Patrick O’Leary. 

Players worked on ball control, passing and shooting, as well as offensive and defensive play. 

 

Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
