The Quakers had only been giving up an average of three goals per game.
The Vikings started off slow, only scoring two goals in the first quarter. But they found the weakness in the Quakers’ defense to tally nine more in the second. Cape keeper Mason Trench and the Vikings’ defense held the Friends’ offense off the scoreboard the entire first half.
“We came out in a better head space than we were in last year when we beat them in overtime,” said senior Burke Healy. “There were some bumps, but we came out and put our best foot forward. I thought we connected well from offense to defense, and our transition was great. We took advantage of our opportunities and had good shots. I was really proud of our team.”
Cape scored four goals in the second half, substituting freely with extra middie lines. The Vikings held the high-scoring Quakers to just two second-half goals.
“I love the running clock because we get to see the younger guys play,” said Trench, who had nine saves in the game. “It’s fun.”
Cape was led by Grant Conway with four goals. Healy and Ryan Morgan each scored three. Alan Grapski cranked two scores, while Evan Burris, Braddock Smith and Channing Smith each score a goal.
Morgan and Burris were credited with two assists, while Braddock Smith, Tanner Wyshock and Channing Smith each had one helper.
“I still don’t think we put four good quarters together the way we really wanted to,” said coach Geoff Shupard. “Today was an improvement. We are a little deeper than they are. We did a good job containing their clear and making them uncomfortable in the middle of the field. Mason played really well. We have to make sure we start sharp in the games to come. I’m pretty happy with how the game went. We just have to keep it going.”
The Vikings travel to Archmere Thursday, May 1, and return to Legends Stadium Friday, May 2, for Senior Night against Smyrna.
