Cape boys’ tennis team grabs No. 2 in conference

Sussex Academy’s girls take second; Cape’s secure third

The Henlopen Conference Tennis Tournament was held recently, with Cape, Milford and Caesar Rodney playing host to all conference players.

In boys’ action, Cape earned four second-place finishes en route to a runner-up team finish. 

Second-singles player Aiden Bowman fell to CR’s Jason Moyer 6-2, 6-2 in the finals after winning 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. Third-singles player Zachary Miller won a three-set match in the semifinals before falling 6-1, 6-3 to CR’s Ayush Patel in the finals. 

First-doubles team Alejandro Justiniani and Trent Kauffman cruised into the finals with a 6-1, 6-0 win, before running into a buzzsaw in the form of CR’s Avery Bonner and Marc Patrick Clemente, who won 6-0, 6-0 in the finals. The second-doubles team of Nathaniel Hoang and Alec Radka advanced to the finals by forfeit. They then fell to Smyrna’s Kevin Christenson and Jack Riley 6-4, 6-2. First-singles player Oliver Townsend finished fourth, falling in three sets in the consolation match. 

In girls’ action, Sussex Academy first-singles player Karina Lopez defeated Cape’s Rachel Ramjattansingh 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals. Lopez claimed second place after falling to Caesar Rodney’s Gracie Clark 6-0, 6-0. Ramjattansingh finished fourth after losing to Dover’s Janelle Gyambibi in the consolation match. 

Cape second-singles player Noa Aboutboul advanced to the championship match, but fell to Caesar Rodney’s Erin Gross. Sienna Tunnell of Sussex Academy lost to Aboutboul in the semifinals, but won the consolation match in three sets to take third place. 

Cape third-singles player Morgan Green earned a second-place finish, reaching the finals with a third-set tiebreaker win over Sussex Academy’s Sage Tunnell. Green couldn’t take down Caesar Rodney’s Evelyn Snyder in the finals. Tunnell won the consolation match in straight sets to earn third. 

Cape’s Sia Patel and Katie Costello finished second in the first-doubles bracket, defeating Sussex Academy’s Sumita Haldar and Catherine Reilly in a third-set tiebreaker to reach the finals. The Cape duo fell to Caesar Rodney’s Ava Vu and Noelle Snyder in the championship. Haldar and Reilly won the consolation in three sets for third place. 

Sussex Academy’s Sienna Tamburo and Callie Juliano defeated Cape’s Kyli Doyon-Baridon and Mya DiSabatino in straight sets in the second-doubles semifinals to advance to the finals. They lost to CR’s Allyson Lebendig and Yatra Patel in the championship. Cape’s duo fell in straight sets to Indian River to finish fourth. 

Caesar Rodney swept the tournament to easily win the conference championship. Sussex Academy finished second with 18 team points, while Cape was third with 16 team points.
