Cape goalie Brynne Fox celebrates the 0-0 tie with her defense. Whenever the Cape and Caesar Rodney soccer teams get together on the field of competition, records can be thrown out the window and spectators can expect 80-plus minutes of nonstop action. The game May 5 was no exception.
Eighty minutes wasn't enough for two of the top-tier teams in the Henlopen Conference, as the squads were tied at the end of regulation. The action continued into two 10-minute golden goal overtimes, but neither could find the back of the net and the match ended in a scoreless tie.
The Cape team moves to 4-5-3, while CR is 8-1-2.
"The girls executed the game plan flawlessly," said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. "Coach Scott Smith was able to attend the CR versus [Indian River] game to get a scouting report. He and I sat down put together a plan. We trained it, and the girls were flawless in their defensive efforts tonight."
Caesar Rodney outshot the Vikings 7-1 and held a 5-0 advantage in corners.
Cape keeper Brynne Fox made seven saves.
"It felt great," said Fox. "That’s exactly the result we were hoping for, and our change of formation was executed well to lead us to the tie. I think it is a huge step for us."
The Vikings travel to Sussex Acadey Thursday, May 7, to face the Seahawks.
