Cape district recognizes National School Counseling Week

February 27, 2026

The Cape Henlopen School District joined schools across the nation in celebrating National School Counseling Week Feb. 2-6, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association.

The 2026 theme, School Counselors Amplify Student Success, highlights the essential role school counselors play in supporting students’ academic achievement, career readiness and social and emotional well-being.

Designed to focus public attention on the unique contributions of school counselors, the week aims to showcase how students benefit because of comprehensive school counseling programs. School counselors help students succeed by removing barriers to learning, fostering personal growth and preparing students for future opportunities beyond the classroom.

The Cape district employs school counselors in all elementary and middle school buildings as well as the high school. These professionals are integral members of each school community, providing a wide range of direct and indirect services to students, families, staff and community partners. Their work supports the district’s mission of educating the whole child and creating safe, inclusive and supportive learning environments.

School counselors are certified educators who hold a master’s degree in school counseling, and their specialized training and experience make them a vital part of the district’s educational team.

“Our school counselors are essential partners in student success,” said Dr. Jenny Nauman, superintendent of the Cape Henlopen School District. “They work every day to support students’ mental health, academic growth and personal development, creating school environments where all students can thrive. It is through their care, expertise and advocacy that students can better navigate challenges and build the confidence they need both in the classroom and beyond.”

Cape Henlopen school counselors work collaboratively with students to help them explore their strengths, abilities, interests and talents. They partner with families as they navigate the challenges of raising children in today’s world, and collaborate closely with teachers and administrators to support students’ academic success, career development and social/emotional growth.

Cape district counselors are: H.O. Brittingham Elementary, Stacy Greenly; Lewes Elementary, Kimberly Corbi; Love Creek Elementary, Alyssia Zanks; Milton Elementary, Mindy Adams; Rehoboth Elementary, Renee Kosc; Beacon Middle, Sheena French and Elizabeth Luff; Frederick D. Thomas Middle, Beonica Duffy and James Nelson; Mariner Middle, Jacqueline Sheridan and Frank Shockley; and Cape Henlopen High School, Jovani O’Grady, Shontae Maddox, Dr. Joel Simon, Christopher Mattioni, Carol Warrington, Kristin Clifton and Garnet Rhue.

“School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing academic concerns, career options and social/emotional skills,” said Jill Cook, executive director of ASCA. “School counseling programs increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”
