Cape girls’ basketball runs the clock over CR

January 15, 2020

The Cape girls’ basketball team jumped out to a 19-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back, putting up a 51-14 win over Caesar Rodney Jan. 14 at home. The Vikings move to 8-3 on the season.

Senior Dania Cannon scored 21 points in the first half and finished the contest with 24 points, 15 from behind the three-point line, five rebounds, six steals and four assists.

“I thought Dania was amazing in the first half,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “I thought we won the majority of the 50/50 possessions, which is all about effort and toughness.”

Mehkia Applewhite scored five points, but was a dominant presence under the basket, grabbing 14 rebounds. Senior forward Carlin Quinn added 12 rebounds to go along with her six points. Ella Rishko was all over the court, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing off three assists and taking away two steals.

“We had a deal with the coaches that we had to make certain goals in the game,” Quinn said. “We didn’t make some of the goals, so we have to do it in practice tomorrow. We are trying to make a competition between ourselves within the game. We can learn a lot in these big wins – how we are running our plays, how we are passing and how we move.”

“We gave them four challenges involving efficiency and effort stats,” Woods said. “The thing we talk about all the time is being excellent every possession. This was a way to measure those things. We agreed on a reasonable challenge. If they hit the mark, coaches have sprints, pushups, etc. If they don’t, they have sprints or pushups.

“These girls are focused. These girls aren’t going to get a big head and be distracted. This group knows what our objectives are and we are not deceived. They know what it is.”

The Vikings JV squad moved to 6-0 on the season with a 41-14 win over the JV Riders.

Akira Perry led with 12 points. Diana Nauman scored four points and pulled down four rebounds to go along with three steals and five assists. Mackenzie Vitolo scored six points. Grace Totten and Onnie Trader each collected five rebounds while scoring six and five points, respectively. Ja'Onna Lee snagged four rebounds and four assists, and secured two steals.

Cape will host Smyrna Friday, Jan. 17.
