Cape girls’ lax dominates in road wins over Easton and Indian River

The Cape girls’ lacrosse team won two road games over three days, winning at Easton 20-7 April 20, and backing that up with an 18-1 dominating victory over Indian River April 22.

“We play our annual Tall versus Small intersquad scrimmage on Saturday morning before focusing on the back portion of our schedule,” said coach Lindsey Underwood. 

Cape faces another condensed collection of formidable opponents next week, hosting Smyrna and Ocean City (N.J.) Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, before playing at Sussex Academy Monday, May 4. 

Claire Lopez passed the milestone of 300 career points in the win at IR with three goals and eight assists. Fifteen of Cape’s 18 goals were assisted. 

Goal scorers were Regan Best, Haley Gamuciello, Amara Fruchtman, Ally Diehl and Kemper Cox each with two, and Avary Miller, Mairead Rishko, Mikaela Gordon, Mackenzie Todd and Alexis Zolper each with one. 

In the win at Easton, Diehl led the pack with four goals. She was followed by Gamuciello and Rishko each with three; Lopez, Gordon, Todd and Best each with two; and Hazel Mancari and Zolper each scored one goal.  

The Cape JV ran its record to 8-0 with a pair of shutouts, beating Easton 18-0 and Indian River 15-0. Goal scorers versus Indian River were Annabell Bonk, Venice Strebs, Blair Chubb, Meredith Frederick and Harper Derrick each with two. Adding single goals were Ariana Cornescu, Linley Draper, Sloan Pierce, Makenzie Kupa and goalie Dylan Peck. Eleven goals were assisted. 

Goal scorers in the win over Easton were Strebs, Frederick Harper Derrick each with three; Delainey Smith, Draper, Daisy Hughes and Bonk with two; and Delaney Senard with one.

The unbeaten Cape JV team will host unbeaten Stephen Decatur at 5 p.m., Monday, April 27.
