The Cape girls’ tennis squad finished second to Caesar Rodney May 12, at the Henlopen Conference tournament.
The Riders won with 24 points. Cape earned 13 points, while Smyrna placed third with 12 points. Sussex Academy took seventh place with two points.
“We had a great close to our season,” said Cape coach Rich Rasa. “Having a regular-season 9-1 in conference record is an accomplishment that any team can be proud of, and having all of our girls in the semifinals of the Henlopen Conference Tournament was great. As far as the tournament final results, as we have emphasized all season, we always learn more from our losses, and certainly this will assist all of us moving forward. The girls and their coaches are very proud of our team and all the effort for the season, and the final result of coming in second for overall conference tournament results. We have a solid foundation to continue to build from for next year and look forward to being even better next season.”
Cape’s first-singles player Abby Hazzard fell in the finals to Caesar Rodney’s Gracie Clark 6-1, 6-1. The second-singles final featured Adrianna Vu of Caesar Rodney defeating Cape’s Kathryn Costello 6-1, 6-0.
“Abby will be representing the whole team at the state tournament Saturday [May 17], and she is ready to go,” said Rasa.
Cape’s Julia DiSabatino defeated Smyrna’s Ayanna Walton 6-2, 6-2 to take the third-singles third-place medal.
Cape’s Courtney Kosc and Mya DiSabatino defeated Polytech’s Abigail Jones and Brynleigh Sheehan 6-1, 6-0 to take third place in doubles.
“The two matches Courtney and I played [May 12] were awesome,” said DiSabatino. “We lost a tough one to Caesar Rodney, but we held our own and proved to be tough competition. Our Polytech match was also fun. We were able to come out with a pretty clean win, which felt like a good way to conclude our season.”
