Members of Cape High’s Future Farmers of America Club were among the 70,000 attendees of the 96th National Future Farmers of America Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, Ind., Nov. 1-4, where senior Jetta Hastings placed 10th in dairy goat production.

Hastings qualified for the contest by placing first in the Delaware dairy goat production proficiency, said agricultural science teacher Heather Valentine, who serves as FFA advisor with teaching peers Ryan Ellis and Pete Olson.

Jetta, FFA club president, was joined by classmates and FFA officers Noah Calhoun, vice president; Rose Lee, secretary; Sam Gossett, sentinel; Jenna Calhoun, historian; and Chris Emmett, junior advisor.

Students ranging in age from middle school through college attended career and leadership development workshops and competitive events at the annual conference.

Club officers Izzy Fuscellaro, treasurer; and Arianna Snead, reporter; did not attend the conference, Valentine said.

While there, Valentine said, Cape students reached their goal to meet kids from every state and Puerto Rico at the networking event.

Many club members are interested in pursuing agriculture-related fields after graduation such as veterinarian and farrier science, Valentine said.

Now gearing up for the state convention in March, students will march in the Lewes Christmas Parade with their dogs and goats.
