Cape JV beats William Penn 2-0

Botched punt snap results in only points of the game
September 25, 2022

The Cape JV football team was in the red zone Sept. 19 at Legends Stadium with under a minute left in the ball game. William Penn was out of timeouts. The Vikings elected to take a knee on the final two snaps rather than run up the score.

The final was Cape 2, William Penn 0.

The Vikings’ lone score came on a safety late in the third quarter after a high snap sailed over the would-be punter’s head into the end zone. Trey Batson ran him down before he could get out of his own house.

The Vikings play to win JV games with an emphasis on development and participation. There are two differently configured teams for offense and defense. They rotate and all play. There are no new plays hatched and drawn in the dirt during the action.

Head coach Mike Frederick likes the 6 p.m. game because he can sit in the stands to watch his players and their coaches.

“Kids need the experience of playing in games, and the coaches benefit from managing a game and making decisions,” Frederick said. “We all learn something from the JV and freshman games.”

The fourth quarter produced the sounds of slapping over clapping as a squadron of mosquitoes drilled spectators and players.

Cape JV is now 2-0 on the season and will next play at Dover at 4 p.m., Monday, Sept. 26.

Coaches Zach Horstmyer, Sammy Mohr, Ben Ashby and Jack Frederick coach 'em up during JV games. Jason Feather, newly anointed director of football operations, roams the sidelines taking care of players and coaches, and keeping stats.
